Mount Vesuvius is the volcanic mountain that erupted in AD 79 and covered the city of Pompeii in 20 feet of pumice and ash. Although still an active volcano, Mount Vesuvius has not erupted since 1944.
If you would like to hike to the summit of Vesuvius, you can catch a shuttle bus that runs up the mountain from Pompeii. The Circumvesuviana regional train connects Naples to Pompeii.
